WD (owned by Seagate) rolled out the My Book Studio Edition II (a mouthful!) with eSata and FireWire 800 interfaces, as well as FW400 and USB. Offering up to 2TB of storage, this is an attractive solution for backup or storage for graphics, music or video artists who have huge files in need of a big drive.
Western Digital says the new drive uses 30% less energy than the typical dual-drive devices on the market. They drives don’t have a fan, so they are quiet as well. A big plus for me, with as many as 5 externals going.
Time Machine is supported, and of course the drive is Mac and PC compatible. WD includes embedded backup software automation capabilities and a Safe Shutdown feature to protect against data loss in the event of a system crash.
Pricing is attractive too. $350 for 1TB, $600 for 2TB. The drives can hold up to 571,400 digital photos, 500,000 songs, 240 hours of hi-def video and 880 hours of DVD-quality video, according to Western Digital.
