Mozy inc. (EMC Corp.) offers on-line backups, but until now Mac users were left out. Not anymore. MozyHome for Mac rolled out yesterday, costing $4.95/month for unlimited storage. Their free version is limited to 2GB online storage.
MozyHome for Mac is aimed at the home and small business user and offers hosted backup for storage and access of documents, photos and data. It backs up incrementally and can run transparently any time. 448-bit Blowfish encryption protects the files, and transfers are made via 128-bit SSL connections.
Users have up to 30 days worth of file versions available to restore using Mozy software on their machines.
Business versions called MozyPro for Mac and MozyEnterprise for Mac should be availabel this summer. MpzyPro for Mac will cost $3.95/month = $.50/GB per month. Mozy Enterprise will be about 15% higher.
ECM acquired Berkeley Data Systems, Inc. who created the Mozy product, last year. In January they launched a new version of Mozy backup and recovery for Windows, including ECM technology from it’s RSA Security Inc. unit.
One consultant who tested Mozy for Mac had tried other on-line backup systems, but was frustrated at the lack of Mac support. He suffered a hard drive crash during an upgrade to Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) and Mozy sent a DVD holding all the lost data.
I haven’t personally tried Mozy yet, but hope to in the future. It looks like a good solution, especially combined with Time Machine.
For me, I still like to have a cloned, bootable backup available. Super Duper is my app of choice, tho Carbon Copy Cloner also does a fine job.
