PC Magazine, not a hotbed of Mac FanBoy activity, published a review of the new MacBook Pro, giving it an Editor’s rating of 4.5 (of 5) and a reader rating of 5.
The review comments on the increased battery life and other new additions, and says the following:
There are other new additions worth talking about, but performance enhancements alone should encourage first-generation MacBook Pro owners and frustrated Windows users to take the plunge. For that, it retains the Editors’ Choice for mainstream laptops.
The size and weight are discussed and favorably compared to Dell and HP laptops, and the screen is well thought of. The editors really like the new touchpad and it’s new abilities:
The MacBook Pro (Penryn) has an intriguing feature—the gesture-based touchpad, which debuted on the iPhone and later showed up on the MacBook Air. This pad, with its ability to manipulate documents and images by finger movements, is a welcome addition to the MacBook Pro line.
The new machine is a great choice for Windows switchers, and for anyone with an original MBPro or older laptop. I want one!
This turned me on:
Apple wasn’t the first to come out with a Penryn-based laptop, but this MacBook Pro is one of the fastest laptops I’ve tested since these processors launched in January.
PC Magazine conducted its own tests for energy usage, finding it more efficient than the Dell M1530 (23W) or the HP dv6500t (19W, as is the previous MBP) The new Penryn MBP was measured at 16W. The editors withheld their Green Approved seal as it didn’t reach the 14W Energy Star 4.0 level in their lab.
The review finishes up with a bit of a critique of Apple for not improving the overall design, but says:
For now, I can’t think of any mainstream laptop other than the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Penryn) that does as good a job of combining fabulous design elements with top-of-the-line performance parts.
