Macs outsell PC’s over $1000!

AppleWatch ran an article last week that is a mind-blower to us long-tome Mac users. Apple’s retail market share is 14% overall and 66% for computers costing $1000 or more!

This is for 1st quarter sales from brick-and-mortar stores, so it is not a perfect picture of sales, but Wow! it shows great growth, no matter what.

Windows notebooks showed “zero percent” growth year to year, while Apple notebooks had “50 to 60 percent growth” (Stephen Baker, NPD VP of Industry Analysis)

Apple desktops show 45% growth, while the overall market is down 20%. Windows is down 25% for the same quarter.

iMacs are growing and the Windows desktop ain’t. No matter how you look at it, Apple is outperforming Windows.”

So why is Apple so strong? Is it because Vista turned out to be a bit of a dog? It’s certainly not been well received. Microsoft claims 140 million licenses have been shipped, but how many Vista users have gone back to XP?

Stephen Baker says

I don’t believe that Vista’s to blame. The vast majority of consumers don’t care [about the installed operating system]

The $1000 or more computer market is what NPD calls the “Premium” category, and Apple has two thirds of that market.

The Mac Mini is the only Apple comuputer selling for less than $1000, giving customers less of a choice below that level. That is only part of the story, I think.

PC pricing puts a lot of importance on lower prices and greater features. Apparently, consumers don’t care so much about features.

People see a value proposition in an offering that gives them a great experience

Apple markets entirely to consumers, particularly multiple-computer homes. The purchase of a 2nd or 3rd computer has different priorities… ease of use, networking, etc.

Apple’s distribution has improved considerably with the Apple Stores, tho third-party retailers like Best Buy doesn’t show up so well. The Apple Store concept makes a huge difference in Apple’s ability to compete. Without Windows PCs alongside to compare with, the Apple Store showcases the Mac.
