Computerworld published an article by Greg Keizer outlining the advances Apple has made, even though its marketing is entirely to consumers, with no enterprise strategy whatsoever.

Mac OS X has a 4.5% share of the enterprise OS market, according to anaylyst Ben Gray (Forrester Research). 18 months ago the share was 1.2% (data collected from Forrester clients who visited Forrester’s web site).

Apple has done virtually nothing to promote this growth… except to produce the Intel Macs, which can utilize virtualization (Parallels, VMware Fusion, etc), allowing them to run XP and Vista.

IT managers are loosening their once tight grip on their users, allowing a wider range of hardware and software to be supported, to keep employees more comfortable with their tools, promoting higher productivity.
