iPhones don’t like too much heat
Electronics don’t like heat. We all know that, but I’d not heard about iPhones having any issues with overheating, until I heard about an individual who left their iPhone in the sun in the tropics.
Not a good idea… I learned that when I left a plastic Kodak camera on the rear window ledge in my parent’s Buick on a trip to Yosemite, and found it melted like a Dali piece by the time we got there.
The iPhone has a warning screen for high temps, and when it reaches an upper temperature limit can be used only for emergency calls. It is completely out of business for anything else, until it cools down.
Fortunately, after a cool-down (shut it down and take it out of the sun!) the iPhone should work well.
This Apple Knowledge Base document (Keeping iPhone 3G within acceptable operating temperatures) details temperature limitations for the iPhone, and what happens if it overheats:
- iPhone 3G stops charging
- Display dims
- Weak cellular signal
- Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it”

Fortunately for those living in the temperate zones of the world, this is not a big problem. Still, keep your phone out of the sun and all should be well with your iPhone.

Interesting… I always wondered about the iPhone… it seems pretty warm sometimes, but I thought it was just body heat from being in my pants pocket. It never got very hot, tho. Thanks for the heads-up!
The best information i have found exactly here. Keep going Thank you
You said it stops charging if it overhears but in the picture the battery logo shows it’s being charged
Simon, you are exactly correct. I didn’t provide the image, but found it on Apple’s KnowledgeBase page . It may be that the phone hasn’t got hot enough yet, or it may be a tricked-up image. I don’t know… and tell the truth, I don’t really want to find out personally. If anyone overheats their iPhone, and wants to let us know… Please do!

Greetings,
Thanks for sharing this link – but unfortunately it seems to be not working? Does anybody here at lindauermacs.com have a mirror or another source?
Thanks,
