I always recommend that clients stay up to date with security updates, bug fixes and application updates, but some users have had problems following every OS X 10.5 system update, including the latest, 10.5.7.

To avoid problems, follow the following steps, and you should be trouble-free:

1. Don’t use Software Update. Instead, download the standalone “Combo” updater.

2. Reboot into Safe Mode.

3. Run the Apple Disk Utility application and perform a Permissions fix and hard drive repair.

4. Run the Combo 10.5.7 updater.

5. Immediately repair permissions again using Apple Disk Utility.
