iPhone software 3.0 is here

in Apple News, iPhone, Software Updates

I was out at a client’s office this morning at 10 am PDT when iPhone 3.0 was released. Got home a little while ago and am installing it now. The process is similar to the 2.0 install. A backup of your iPhone is suggested, and will make very good sense… just in case!

Plug the iPhone in, click on the iPhone device in iTunes, and it will automatically tell you that there is a new software version available. Click”Update” and off you go.

Downloading the software takes a while, and then all data on the phone is backed up. I have about 875 MB free on my 16 GB iPhone 3G, so you can imagine that will take a little while.

Wait! I got a dialogue box indicating that Apple’s registration server can’t activate the phone… please try later! BUMMER!

A quick trip thru the forums indicate that this is a pretty common happening… to the point that some Apple forums were overloaded and went down.

Is it Apple’s problem, or AT&T’s? Who knows. Be patient, sooner or later it will work.

I just want it NOW! Here’s why, courtesy of Macintouch.com

Apple is now selling OS 3.0 for the iPod Touch at $9.95 through iTunes and distributing iPhone OS 3.0 free of charge to iPhone owners.
