Apple put up a Knowledge Base post on June 25 re: keeping the iPhone 3G and 3Gs within correct operating temps. A synopsis follows:
Use your iPhone where temperatures are between 0° and 35° C (32° to 95° F) ideally. Higher or lower temperatures may shorten battery life temporarily, or cause your iPhone to malfunction.
iPhone storage areas should be between -20° and 45° C (-4° to 113 F). Don’t leave your phone in the car… especially in summer, when temps in parked cars can go way above this range.
If your iPhone exceeds the normal temperature range you may experience:
- Charging stops
- The display dims
- Weak cellular signal
The temperature warning screen (below) appears.

You’ll see a message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” on this screen. It means “Your Phone is too HOT!”.
Shut the iPhone off and cool it off, and you should be fine. You may still be able to make emergency calls, or not.
Apple cautions against the following:
- Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.
- Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.
- Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight
.
Be warned! The great enemy of all electronics is heat!
