Safari users need help from add-ons like Saft or Glims to increase tab functionality in Safari. Until now, that is. Safari 4 includes some new preferences that make parts of those add-ons unnecessary.
Tabs Folder
In the General Preference, you have some new choices. One allows opening a new window with a tabs folder. This is great if you have a number of sites that you want to see every time you open Safari, such as multiple web-mail sites, news sites, banking or stock sites, favorite blogs, YouTube, etc. You can have those sites’ bookmarks in a tabs folder that will automatically open when you start Safari or open a new window. This almost works for me, but I need more.
Re-open tabs from the last session
This one is vital for me, personally. I often have a dozen or more sites opened in separate tabs… and don’t always have time to look them all over. I love the ability of leaving the tabs open when I close Safari, and having them reopen when I start the app again. I used Saft happily for years to do this, then moved to Glims to try it out. Both are great helpers for Safari, and add a lot more than re-opening previous sessions’ tabs, but that was them most important function for me. I am still waiting for Safari to accommodate this need, but for the time being Glims is working well.
The added features you get from Glims and Saft may be important to you, too, but it is great to see the Safari engineers adding more functionality to the browser.
