A serious iPhone security flaw was uncovered yesterday, and Apple released an update to fix the SMS vulnerability demonstrated in the Black Hat security conference.

Apparently, an iPhone could be remotely taken over, using SMS technology. To prevent vulnerability, plug your phone into your computer, start iTunes, and click on the “Update” button on the Summary tab. It is a complete update, and will take a fair amount of time to download and install, so be prepared for your phone to be out of service for a while.

I updated around noon, Pacific Daylight Time on July 31 (today) and no doubt Apple’s servers are very busy indeed. It took about 7-10 minutes to download via a broadband connection. Then the iPhone was backed up, and then the software was verified, the phone prepared for installation, and the software installed. Then the updated software is verified and the firmware updated. This process took about 9 minutes on my Mac Pro, including the iPhone restart.
