The US Patent and Trademark Office published a patent application yesterday from Apple that is intriguing, if not definitave. It’s for a high-end 3D interface that provides parallax transforms of objects, applications and games with high detail reflections providing incredible realism, and uses a new wide-angle iSight camera to track users head and changes the screen perspective to match head movement.
A full description of the new technology can be found on the Patently Apple site here. Wireframe drawings showing some possibilities are included, and the potential is amazing, for the finder, for apps and especially for games.
A short video is also included showing an example of head tracking on an iPhone/iPod Touch. It’s a facinating video, but the accompaining music is annoying, IMHO. It shows amazing realism from an iPhone sceen.
The video can be found on YouTube as well.
Is this the next step in Mac OS X interface design? Who knows? Apple files a lot of patents that may never be used or may be used in unexpected ways… that’s what they’ve been doing for 25 years. I have hopes…
