Walmart drops iPhone 3GS price to $97

The iPhone 4G will be released soon, and in advance of this, 3GS inventories are being cleared.

Walmart announced the new price for the iPhone 3GS 16GB of $97 today, down from $197. This is a great price for anyone thinking of buying an iPhone, but has a tight budget. The 16 GB version, with twice the storage of the 8GB version, is a very usable tool for business, and a great iPod as well. Besides, the 8GB iPone 3GS doesn’t seem to be available any more, at least from Apple.

June 7 is the date of Steve Jobs’ keynote at the WWDC ’10 conference, and that seems a likely time for an announcement of the iPone 4G. The last three summers have had new iPhone releases, so it looks like a good bet.

Apple may well lower the price of the iPhone 3GS at the time of the 4G announcement, probably to $99 – This is what happened in 2009, at least.

If you are willing to pay the regular price for an iPhone, or your contract time is up (mine isn’t, darn it!), wait a couple of weeks and see what the iPhone 4G will bring, or at least what Apple has to say about it.
