Macworld.com says it as well as anyone in their article posted today.
The iPhone 4 will be available June 24, following the IOS (the new operating system for iPhone/iPad/Touch) rollout June 21. iPhone 3 and 3G owners and iPad users will have some of the benefits of the new IOS, but the iPhone 4 has it all.
Priced at $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) for customers who are eligible for an upgrade sometime in 2010 and are willing to sign up for a new 2 year contract, the new iPhone delivers a lot. Whether it’s worth it to you… your decision.
Early adopters of the 3GS iPhone (like me) are eligible for an “Early Upgrade” even though only a year and a half have passed. I’m delighted, but may wait a month or 2 to buy the new phone. Or not…
If you don’t want to cough up for a new iPhone 4, Apple introduced the 8GB iPhone3GS today selling for $99, while the remaining 16GB and 32GB models will run $149 and $199 (with 2 year contract) until they are gone.
In addition, AT&T is no longer providing new phone plans specifically for iPhones… a new purchase, not connected to an existing contract, can use plans starting at $55. This is the Nation 400 voice plan ($40) plus the DataPlus for $15.
The phone itself is spectacular. Details are available at Apple’s site, but highlights include:
- FaceTime, which is video calling… over WiFi.
- A new Retina display, with 4 times the pixel count of the previous iPhones. Check the page out… it’s stunning!
- Multitasking; not Mac multitasking, but much better than what we have now. Voip calls can be received while other apps run, GPS apps can run in the bakground, listen to audio in the background, switch between recently used apps quickly
- HD Video recording and editing. New camera capability, a built-in LED light and iMovie on iPhone 4 for editing make high quality video easy, and it’s easy to share using MMS, and sync back to your Mac or PC.
- iMovie has it’s own page. This version is designed for the Multi-Touchscreen iPhone and iPad. It allows adding music, themes and more, and will cost $4.99
- The iPhone 4 Camera is a huge improvement… 5 megapixel, with built-in LED flash for low-light and a 5x digital zoom brings a lot of capability to the iPhone4. There’s a VGA quality camera on the front of the iPhone 4 (used for the Video Phone feature as well) that makes self portraits easy, and autofocus and tap-to-focus make it easy to get the focus, white balance and exposure for the part of the photo you want to be sharp and clear. The page shows a gallery of unretouched photos taken with the iP4. Wow!
- Gyroscope: The iPhone 4 add a three-axis gyroscope for measuring angular velocity. It can figure out pitch, roll, and yaw; and rotation about gravity. The gyroscope plus the accelerometer provide six-axis motion sensing. There are also new CoreMotion APIs that developers can call for extremely precise position information—ideal for games.
- IOS Features: One of my favorite new features is Folders, an easy to store apps and declutter the home screens.
